Niara: ROTK Devlog | Sticking with high quality
Sometimes sticking with creating absolutely high quality content is hard. This is especially true when you are an indie game studio or are just starting out. You have no social proof, no recognition out there, no money and you are starting out with a completely new IP. You may wonder sometimes that your game will probably go unnoticed and not be played by many people (especially if it's a paid game). And then you will start to think, that hey, why should I work my ass off to make extremely high quality content when nobody is going to play it? This is where you should stop and take a little break from the game. It is never okay to develop a low quality game. Never!
If you are feeling low then stay away from your game for a while. Make it late, but make it good. Yes, maybe people will not play your entirely new IP right away but if you make it high quality and promote it enough then they will start to notice it. Nobody is going to stick with your game other than yourself. Hell, not even your employees or team members are going to stick with it. You are the owner and only you will have to stand by it. A captain goes down with his ship. But the ship should be extremely high quality of course. Low quality is a sin and should always be.
Always try to correct even the most minor and unnoticeable mistakes in your content. Oh, that pixel is one shade too dark. Fix it. That button is 2 pixels too much to the left. Shift it. Focusing on the most minute details is what slowly creates a huge gap between you and people who don't. And that gap very easily decides which content is high quality and which is not. Focusing on minute details is hard especially when you are coming in the market with a new IP. But think about it this way. Focus on that one player who decides to give your game a try. Even if one player buys it you have to give it your all to make your game as enjoyable as possible for that one player. Nobody in this world should be insignificant. If only one player buys and plays your game then you must work hard to make the game as good as possible for that one player. This mindset will help you maintain extreme focus on the quality of your game. And this will in turn lead to huge success in the future.
We also focused on quality while developing our video game Niara: ROTK. We focused on every little pixel and every little UI element in the game and tried to make it as high quality as possible. We have also optimized the game as much as possible by compressing the assets as much as possible without degrading their quality. A considerable work has gone into optimizing the UX of the game as well.
In conclusion, always focus on the quality of your content. Even if one person consumes it, give it your all for that one person. No soul in this world is insignificant. When you do this your one customer will feel it. The quality will speak through the screen and into their mind. This will help you get a lot of social proof when that person tells about your game to other people. And even if they don't, hey, you made somebody's day with your game! That should be your goal, serving that one person who buys your game. This mindset will set you up for a bigger success in future. And this is true for all types of content, not just video games.
